I post behind-the-scenes videos often on Instagram and without a doubt, the most common question I get is, “what pen/marker/chalk did you use for that?” So today in this blog post I’m sharing my favorite tools for modern hand-lettering. Stay tuned for a special offer too!
The BEST tool for doing calligraphy is the one you have. What do I mean by this?? Calligraphy is a SKILL – and one that takes lots and lots of practice. Muscle memory and hand positioning are super important and honestly, that just takes time. I love using a pencil for practicing because it’s easy to carry with me anywhere and won’t spill like liquid ink. Seriously, you can do calligraphy with a pencil.
While it’s true that a certain pen/pencil/chalk/tool can’t replace hours of practice… there are definitely some that are better than others. The caveat here: calligraphy is a very personalized skill, meaning what I like best won’t necessarily be what you like best! That being said, here are some of my favorites:
Interested in more than just calligraphy tools (signage, biz, etc) – or want direct links? I’ve compiled a comprehensive list of the tools I use most, some even daily, to run my calligraphy and design business. For $17 you can access the FULL list with links to where I buy them. There are over 75 things included, with my favorites highlighted. Yes, this is an item you purchase – you get five years’ worth of trial and error for $17!
If you have purchased the comprehensive guide and have questions about anything included (or not included) I’m happy to answer them! Have a material, program, or tool you love that I didn’t list?? Let me know… I’m always looking to test out new materials and techniques!
